Advertising Strategies

I saw a shirt yesterday that was spot on. It said, “I am only here for the commercials and snacks!” While I love me some football, the commercials are where it is at on Super Bowl Sunday! I think most high school student would agree!!

I created this resource for my own classroom to help my students understand target audiences and the fact that billions of advertising dollars go into targeting people their age every year. They have a giant target on their heads because of their buying power and spending behavior. Do they, or we as adults, even notice that we are walking right into a very intentionally set trap when we fall into the persuasion of ads?

This highly engaging lesson will have your students on the edge of their seats as they learn all about the marketing strategies that advertisers use on us as consumers. I have included a very thorough PowerPoint presentation with sample commercials linked so as different advertising strategies are discussed, you can share examples with your students. Data and statistics from previous Super Bowl games is included, as well as some trends that have surfaced over time, as far as the price of ad time, who is buying and why some companies do or do not choose to advertise during the game of the year.

The worksheets allow students to process the definitions presented during the lecture and identify the audiences for specific advertisements.

You will find all you need to help students understand target markets and how agencies use advertising to change consumer behavior. Advertising strategies that are covered include: Repetition, Testimonial, Emotional Appeal, Bandwagon, Slogan, Bait & Switch, Expert Opinion, Humor, Plain Folk, Product Comparison. PowerPoint, digital worksheets, Webquest, group activity and BOOM CARDS are part of the lesson.

Perhaps the best part of this resource is that it is updated every year and you can download the new version for FREE every year after your initial purchase.

It’s game time!!
