If you thought BOOM CARDS were only for the elementary classroom, you thought wrong! High school students also love them! BOOM CARDS™ are interactive task cards that are engaging and effective at helping students become proficient in a specific content area. I have created several “decks” that can be used in the Financial Literacy classroom that are ideal for face-to-face, virtual learning, or any hybrid format.

BUYING A CAR

Buying a car is every high schooler's dream! Helping them understand the details of this major purchase will help them create a solid financial future. Understanding the differences between leasing and buying, all about depreciation, and financing options are part of this lesson. This 20 slide deck is accompanied by a video (4:48) to introduce major details of buying a car, but the questions in the deck are not limited to the content in the video. Students need to have access to a loan payment calculator for a couple of calculations. One idea for implementation would be to have students work in pairs. One student could operate the Boom Cards™ and the other could operate the loan payment calculator.

PAY YOURSELF FIRST

Learning to Pay Yourself First is critical for a solid financial future. Saving ten percent of everything earned will put a high school student ahead of the game. This deck will help students identify how to pay themselves first and how they can plan for the future. Some math problems are provided so students can calculate ten percent of a given amount. A video is provided on the first slide to provide context to PYF, but a prior discussion is suggested prior to completing the deck.

BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND

This deck helps students identify the importance of having an emergency fund and saving money for unexpected expenses. They learn where to keep their money, how much to save, and when to use it.

FINANCIAL BEHAVIOR, ATTITUDES & VALUES

Identifying values, recognizing attitudes, and developing appropriate behavior around money is essential for financial success. This deck will help students identify components of a SMART goal, the steps of decision making, and tips for developing a financial plan.
